We Thank You With A Welcome Reception Of Local Flavor
On Thursday night, Buddy's Crabs & Ribs will be catering the Welcome Reception for the racers, and family and friends. Buddy's has been a staple in the Annapolis restaurant scene for decades. The event will take place at Fawcett Boat Supply (Co-Title Sponsor).
Water Sponsor Will Keep You Hydrated at J/35 North American Championship
Feeding and keeping your crew hydrated can be an expensive part of a J/35 racing campaign, especially on top of other travel costs. Well, this year you can scratch water off your budget for the J/35 North American Championships.
Sterling Real Brokerage, owned by local AYC member Jasen Adams, has just signed on as the official water sponsor of the J/35 North American Championship regatta. Sterling Brokerage will be providing a free case of water per boat for each of the three days of racing. The cases will be available at the official Race Headquarters at the AYC Annex.
Sterling Brokerage is also sponsoring the photography boat. They will provide the on-water transportation for the official regatta photographer, Tim Wilkes. Tim's photographs will be available for purchase at the social events each night, as well as online through Tim Wilkes' Photography website. Photos of your boat with your sponsor's logo are an excellent way for you to justify a return on investment to individual boat sponsors that you are allowed to have now that the regatta is designated as a Category C regatta.

Category C
The J/35 Class Association and Annapolis Yacht Club Race Committee have decided to officially permit Category C advertising in the 2006 North American Championship Regatta. This is an extremely beneficial aspect of the Notice of Race because it provides an opportunity for many competitors to secure financial support for their campaign. This will be a major benefit to help defray the costs for out-of-town competitors to participate in the regatta.
Annapolis Yacht Club Offers Free Dockage
As part of the negotiations with The Annapolis Yacht Club to host the 2006 J/35 North American Championship Regatta, AYC racing officials are providing included free dockage for all regatta competitors. The Club estimates that they will able to accommodate approximately 6 boats. Under this agreement, owners will be able to tie up their boats to the floating dock at the Sailing Center in a rafting configuration.
Docking at AYC will allow racers to be centrally located to the social activities being hosted at AYC. Guests will also be within walking distance of to three major marine supply stores and the many hotels and B&Bs, restaurants, bars, nightlife and shopping in and around downtown Annapolis.
Radisson Special Offers
After months of negotiating with the Radisson Hotel in Annapolis, MD, the Regatta Committee was able to secure a very attractive deal for competitors of the 2006 J/35 North American Championship Regatta. Reservations for the regatta that are made prior to July 15, 2006 will be able to take advantage of a $149 per night room rate. This rate is for double occupancy stays from September 14 - 17; this rate may be applied for people arriving earlier and/or departing later than these dates.
More important than the reduced room rate is the free shuttle transportation that the Radisson has included in the deal. In addition to eliminating the hassle of parking and driving in an unfamiliar are, this unlimited free transportation could save out-of-town guests as much as $300 in rental car fees.
To make your reservation, call the Radisson at 1-800-333-3333. Reference the group name "2006 J-35 North American Championship Regatta" for the discounted rate.
Notice of Regatta
The final draft of the North American Championship Notice of Regatta was submitted to the CBYRA for inclusion in this year's Greenbook.
Official NAC Perpetual Logo
Some of you may recognize the newly designed logo originally unveiled nationally on the J35.org site in June of 2004 and regionally in announcement emails sent to prospective participating skippers. This logo was designed locally, by one of our own J/35 crew members, with the intent to remain the NAC's perpetual logo.
Permission was granted to the 2005 NAC committee in Muskegon, MI for the reproduction of this logo during their event last year. Fleet 7 organizers are following suit, by utilizing the logo for its promotional, advertising, clothing and other branding needs related to the 2006 J/35 North American Championship in Annapolis.
Winning The Vote
The vote to have the 2006 J/35 North American Championship in Annapolis did not come easy. The process began with Fleet Captain, Mark McGonigle, composing a request letter for the J/35 Class Association President, Russ Perry, to review prior to the Fall Class Meeting. Mark had already been told that there were other fleets interested in hosting the 2006 NAC. The front runner was Toronto, who had hosted the most successful NAC in history, along with winning "2003 Regatta of The Year" from the Ontario Sailing Association.
During the Class Meeting, Mark presented what Russ termed "his passionate plea" to the other District Governors for consideration. Then Toronto's particulars were mentioned followed by a discussion of both venues. Each bid spoke to major points in complete opposition, like spring versus fall, stand alone or combined with another event, and small local fleet versus a large established fleet. In the end, the vote swung to Annapolis because of the opportunity for fleet expansion.
The District Governors realized that a major purpose of the Class Association is to promote growth of all fleets. Toronto has the largest and strongest fleet in the nation. They do not need the assistance of a high profile event to maintain interest in such a competitive fleet. Annapolis, on the other hand, is just beginning on an upswing of attraction to the J/35 fleet. The 2006 J/35 North American Championship can help increase involvement of existing boats and potential new owners in the Mid Atlantic region.
